Switzerland Tourism is experiencing a shift in travel trends among Indian tourists, who are now seeking offbeat destinations, more adventure, luxury experiences, and a deeper connection with local culture. This change aligns with Switzerland Tourism’s strategic focus on long-haul travelers and year-round tourism.

At a recent event in Mumbai, Switzerland Tourism showcased the country’s seasonal diversity and emerging trends among Indian travelers, reflecting a growing interest in exploring Switzerland beyond the traditional summer months.

In the past, Indian tourists typically visited Switzerland during May and June, coinciding with school holidays and the desire to escape the summer heat. However, recent years have seen a shift, with more travelers choosing to explore Switzerland in the autumn and early winter. These visitors are increasingly drawn to the vibrant colors of fall, festive Christmas markets, and winter activities like sledging and snow-shoeing, instead of the usual focus on skiing.

The profile of the Indian traveler has also diversified, with an increasing number of couples, solo adventurers, and groups of friends joining the traditional family tourists. This broader audience is showing a growing appetite for off-peak travel, allowing them to experience Switzerland’s beauty in every season.

Switzerland Tourism’s “Travel Better” campaign encourages sustainable tourism, promoting quality over quantity. The initiative focuses on extended stays, cultural immersion, and the use of Switzerland’s eco-friendly Swiss Travel System, all aimed at enhancing the visitor experience while supporting sustainability.

In 2023, Indian tourists accounted for 602,000 overnight stays in Switzerland, and this figure is projected to reach over 900,000 in the coming years, driven by the rising demand for new experiences and seasonal travel.

Representatives from top Swiss destinations such as Zurich, Lucerne, and Interlaken highlighted their unique attractions across the seasons, showcasing Switzerland’s appeal as a year-round destination. As Indian travelers continue to embrace more diverse and adventurous journeys, Switzerland Tourism is well-positioned to meet this demand with its blend of luxury, adventure, and cultural richness.
